Lauren’s journey with The Pyjama Foundation began when she saw an advertisement in her local newspaper. At the time, she was balancing her roles as a full-time mother, wife, and university student, and was seeking a volunteer opportunity that would fit into her busy schedule. “The Pyjama Foundation advertisement mentioned a commitment of only one hour per week. I thought this was perfect for me,” Lauren shared. This opportunity not only aligned with her passion for working with children but also allowed her to make a significant impact through small yet meaningful interactions.

Over the years, Lauren watched G grow from an “energetic two-year-old" into a confident young teenager. Their relationship evolved from playing games and reading picture books to tackling homework, writing resumes, and exploring G’s interests in cooking and crafts. Each conversation, whether about schoolwork or life’s challenges, helped G build her confidence and sense of self. Reflecting on their journey, Lauren said, “I have loved watching G grow in confidence and achieve her goals. I have loved watching her dance concerts, her drama performances and helping her write speeches for leadership roles at school.”

The bond between Lauren and G highlights how every interaction, no matter how small, can contribute to a child’s sense of stability and belonging. In a heartfelt speech at the Pyjama Angel of the Year Awards, G expressed her gratitude, saying, “Lauren, you have been a Godsend from heaven... You are just so special. You always try to make me happy.” For G, Lauren’s presence has been a beacon of support, helping her navigate the complexities of growing up in care.
As we observe National Child Protection Week, Lauren and G’s story is a powerful reminder that every conversation truly matters. The connections formed through The Pyjama Foundation go beyond academic support; they foster a deep sense of belonging and self-worth that can have a lasting impact on a child’s life. Lauren’s story is just one of many, but it underscores the profound difference a dedicated mentor can make in helping every child in every community have a fair go.
As G put it: “You are one of my highlights during the week because there’s always something I can look forward to… I love you so much and I can’t wait to see what comes next.”
In the end, The Pyjama Foundation’s work is about more than just education—it’s about empowering children in care to believe in themselves and their potential.
