Our Pyjama Angels are the heart of the Love of Learning Program, empowering children in foster care with positive relationships to transform their lives. They are a wonderful example of turning compassion to action, helping children who have often experienced trauma and/or neglect.
Meet Mandee, a dedicated Pyjama Angel who has been volunteering with The Pyjama Foundation for three years! Her journey began with a simple act of kindness and has transitioned into meaningful relationships that have positively impacted the lives of children in foster care, and her own life too.
“To be honest, on an intrinsic level there is no greater sense of satisfaction than knowing that you have helped someone work towards being their best self.”
Mandee continues to work full time and is a proud single mum to two sons, who are now in their 20s. And she’s currently pursuing her third degree in psychology.
In 2021, Mandee was a referee for someone applying to become a Pyjama Angel, and that’s when she found out about The Pyjama Foundation. She researched and decided to get involved herself.
As a mother, Mandee had always been a consistent source of support for her sons, especially in strengthening their literacy and numeracy skills. She saw firsthand how these foundational skills could transform lives. “I wish I had started volunteering with The Pyjama Foundation sooner,” Mandee shared.
Mandee has been mentoring two young people in foster care for years now. “Beyond their increased confidence in numeracy and literacy, there is also that confidence that they gain by knowing that they can keep up with (or start to catch up to) their classmates,” Mandee said.
Mandee’s story is a powerful reminder of the impact one person can have. Her dedication and compassion have helped foster children build confidence, resilience, a consistent relationship, and hope for a brighter future.
