As National Volunteer Week approaches, we're celebrating the incredible work that Pyjama Angels do every week.

Today, we’re proud to share the story of Merle, who has been a Pyjama Angel for over 10 years and whose quiet dedication has made a lasting impact.

Merle always wanted to help children. When she saw an ad in her local paper about The Pyjama Foundation, she didn’t hesitate to apply. Soon after completing her training, Merle was matched with B, an energetic eight-year-old. She still remembers their very first time meeting, B was chasing lizards around the garden. “He's got an incredible interest in animals and environment and nature and he's the most beautiful boy,” Merle shared.

Over the past decade, Merle has supported B through reading, writing, and exploring his love of wildlife. “This young man is 18 already, and he’s now looking for work,” she said. “I introduced him to somebody at the Taronga Zoo and I managed to get him a position learning with them… I'd love to help him get a job.”

Though B is now entering adulthood, Merle's bond with him remains strong. “We go to the park, or we walk around the lake... We’re friends now so it’s not a matter of teaching him anymore.

In 2024, Merle was named Pyjama Angel of the Year for New South Wales. At the award ceremony, her family were so proud to meet B for the first time. “They’ve all been very interested in B's progress and have been proud of me... He’s a beautiful person,” Merle shared.

Looking back on their journey, Merle shared just how special their relationship has become.

“I've been very happy with my placement... I’m like his foster granny.”

Merle’s story is a reminder that it’s not just what you do, it’s the love, time and care you give that leave a lasting imprint on a child’s life. B has a wonderful foster family, and Merle has been additional constant support, helping him grow into a kind, capable young man with dreams for the future.

To every Pyjama Angel: Thank you. You change lives one visit at a time, with your compassion and commitment. And to Merle, thank you for sharing your story and your heart. We can’t wait to see what comes next for you and B.
