The Pyjama Foundation:

The Pyjama Foundation transforms children’s lives through literacy. The Pyjama Foundation makes a direct, long-term, positive impact on children in foster and alternative care by improving their literacy skills.
We recruit, screen, train and support volunteers from the community – Pyjama Angels – to implement our Love of Learning Program. Pyjama Angels visit a child in foster or alternative care once a week to read books aloud, play educational games, and help them with their homework.

"This program is very good for the children’s self esteem. The one on one time from another adult makes the children feel special and valued. It is also very important for the children to learn to trust another adult. Because of their past these kids have lost trust in adults." - Foster Carer

"I sense that Jo really wants to learn to read well, although he finds it hard to concentrate for too long - shorter books suit him more. He really seems to enjoy the one-on-one attention and I think that he will continue to give reading a go with this encouragement and praise. Thank you for providing me with the opportunity to be involved with this program; this is a very positive experience for both of us."
- Pyjama Angel

Children who are read aloud to regularly associate books with feelings of safety and happiness and fall into literacy without much trouble at all…“If every parent and every adult caring for a child read aloud a minimum of three stories a day to the children in their lives, we could probably wipe out illiteracy within one generation.

I cannot applaud The Pyjama Foundation enough for this grand innovative idea and the sterling work they are undertaking to put that idea into practice." - Mem Fox
